Bariatric Surgery

Since 2003, Bayou Surgical Specialists has helped patients with a comprehensive and healthy approach to surgical weight loss management. Our surgeons perform bariatric surgery with a success rate that is well above the national average. We believe in long-term patient support. We hold monthly support groups for past and future clients.

The laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy is a restrictive procedure that works by converting the stomach into a long, thin tube. This type of bariatric surgery involves stapling the stomach along its length and removing the excess organ. The size of your stomach is reduced by about 75%, divided vertically from top to bottom, and hunger-stimulating hormones produced by the stomach are virtually eliminated.

In the sleeve gastrectomy, the pyloric valve (which regulates the emptying of the stomach into the small intestines) remains intact at the bottom of the stomach. This means that although smaller, the stomach works in the same way as before. Compared to other forms of weight-loss surgery, there are fewer restrictions on the foods that patients can consume, but the procedure is not reversible.

Bayou Surgical Specialists also provides laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LAP-BAND®). Lap Band surgery is a restrictive procedure, during which an inflatable band is placed around the upper part of the stomach. This type of bariatric surgery results in a smaller stomach pouch, which restricts the amount of food that can be consumed at one time and increases the time it takes for the stomach to empty. As a result, a patient achieves sustained weight loss by limiting food intake, reducing appetite and slowing digestion. Compared to other surgeries, Lap Band is the least invasive. It is also adjustable and reversible. Our bariatric surgery offerings include LAP-BAND® revision, removal, and conversion to sleeve gastronomy.
